1. What this policy is about
During our interactions, you share personal information with RNews.
This policy tells you what to expect when we collect and use your information, in accordance with the requirements of the Protection of Personal Information Act (“POPIA”) and the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”).
We may need to update it occasionally, but we will inform you when we do. You should read this policy along with the terms of use.

2. The type of information we collect
The personal information that we collect about you may differ on the basis of how you interact with us.
We may process various types of personal information as follows (including, but not limited to):
Identity information
Your name, surname, identity number, registration number, marital status, legal status, date of birth, gender, family status, home language, educational background, employment history and/or status;
Contact information
Your home, billing or delivery addresses, e-mail addresses and telephone numbers and social media handles;
Financial information
Bank account and payment details, VAT registration numbers and regulatory filings;
Technical information
Information from your browser, computer, or mobile device, which provide us with technical information when you visit our website, including device and network information, cookies and analytics information;
Opinions, preferences and other sensitive information
When you choose to enter a competition, or quiz or take part in a survey, we could collect information about your interests, preferences or opinions on various topics;

Your preferences in respect of receiving marketing information from us and our third parties, and your communication preferences.
We may also process, collect, store and/or use aggregated data, which may include historical or statistical data (“aggregated data”) for any purpose. Aggregated data may be derived from your personal information but is not considered personal information, as this data does not directly or indirectly reveal your identity. 3. When and how we process your information
We will only process your personal information for lawful purposes relating to our business if the following circumstances apply:

- It is necessary to conclude or perform under a contract we have with you;
- The law requires or permits it;
- You are a child, and a competent person (such as a parent or guardian) has consented thereto on your behalf.
3.1 When you contact us, we collect information from your message
When you contact us by social media, email, telephone, or online chat with a query, complaint, or request, we collect the information included in your message. We use the information we collect to reply to, investigate, and resolve your query, complaint, or request.

3.2 When you send us your CV
If you are interested in joining our team, and you send us your CV, we will use this information to consider your application. This may include credit and reference checks.
3.3 When you subscribe to our newsletter
We have various newsletters that are delivered by email weekly and some daily.
If you subscribe, it is important that you know you can unsubscribe at any time by following the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email or contacting us.
If you choose to enter a competition or complete a quiz or a survey, you will automatically be subscribed to all our newsletters. You will be able to unsubscribe from all or any of the newsletters at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email or contacting us.

3.4 When you take part in a survey/quiz or competition
When you choose to enter a competition, quiz or partake in a survey, we will process your information to administer it and fulfil the prize (if applicable). We may also use the information to understand general consumer trends and patterns so we can develop and support existing and ongoing marketing strategies for our products and services. We and our partners might contact you via email and/or through social media platforms (including WhatsApp) and SMS with marketing communications regarding products, services, promotions and offers you may find interesting. Participants will be able to opt out of receiving marketing communication with every marketing communication.

5. We send your information to other countries
Some of the service providers that we use may be located in other countries. For instance, our cloud storage service. These countries may not have the same levels of protection of personal information as South Africa or the United Kingdom. If this is the case, we require that they undertake to protect the personal information of our users to the same level that we do.
We provide for appropriate safeguards by means of contracts between us and our foreign service providers.
6. We don’t keep your information longer than we need to
We will not retain your information for longer than we need to unless we are legally required to do so. We will keep your personal information for as long as:
- we are required or permitted by law or a contract with you to do so;
- it is for lawful purposes that are related to our performance of our functions and activities;
- we reasonably require it for evidentiary purposes;
- we require it for statistical or research purposes, we will then de-identify the personal information where necessary; or
- you agree to us retaining it for a specified further period.
To determine the appropriate retention period for personal information, RNews will consider, among other things, the nature and sensitivity of the personal information, the potential risks or harm that may result from its unauthorised use or disclosure, the purposes for which we process it and whether those purposes may be achieved through other means. RNews will always comply with applicable legal, regulatory, tax, accounting or other requirements as they pertain to the retention of personal information.
7. We have taken reasonable steps to minimise the impact of a breach
We have implemented reasonable security measures based on the sensitivity of the information we hold. These measures are in place to protect the information from being disclosed, from loss, misuse, and unauthorised access, and from being altered or destroyed.
We review our information collection, storage and processing practices periodically, to ensure that we keep abreast of good practice.
If something should happen, we have taken steps to minimise the threat to your privacy. We will let you know of any breaches that affect your personal information and we will inform you how you can help minimise the impact.
8. You have the right to be informed about the personal information we have, and what we do with it
You have the right to:
- ask us what we know about you;
- ask what information was sent to our suppliers, service providers, or any other third party;
- ask us to update or correct any out-of-date or incorrect personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to delete the personal information we hold about you;
- unsubscribe from any direct marketing communications we may send you; and
- object to the processing of your personal information.

Whilst we will attend to your request as soon as reasonably possible, it can take us up to 21 days to respond to your request, because there are procedures that we need to follow. In certain cases, we may require proof of your identity.
9. Your rights in terms of the GDPR
If you are in the European Union, you have these rights in terms of the GDPR:
- The right to be informed about the collection and use of your personal information.

- You have the right to have your personal information erased, also known as the ‘right to be forgotten’. You may make such a request from us by contacting contact(at)rnews.co.za. We may take one month to respond to your request and may refuse in certain circumstances.
- You have the right to request that we restrict or suppress your personal information. You may make such a request from us by contacting contact(at)rnews.co.za. We may take one month to respond to your request and may refuse in certain circumstances.
- You have the right to reuse your personal information for your own purposes across different services, also known as the right to data portability.
- You have the right to object to us processing your personal information in certain circumstances. You may make your objection by contacting contact(at)rnews.co.za. We may take one month to respond to your request. There are legitimate reasons why we may refuse your objection, which depend on why we are processing your personal information.
