At least 21 people were killed and 38 injured in the southern Helmand province in Afghanistan on Sunday when a bus hit an oil tanker and a motorcycle.

“According to the information we received so far earlier today, 21 people died in an accident between a passenger bus, an oil tanker and a motorcycle,” Mohammad Qasim Riyaz, a provincial government official, told AFP.

At least 38 people were injured in the collision.

The vehicles caught fire during the accident.

The accident took place on Sunday morning on a main road between Kabul and Herat.

Fatal traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan due to poor roads, negligent driving and a lack of regulation.

An oil tanker overturned and caught fire in the Salang Pass in December 2022. A total of 31 people died and many suffered burns.
